First Small Action Checklist
Choose one useful, reversible intervention that can be maintained and observed.
Use the checklist to test scope, cost, maintenance and what evidence you will collect before scaling up.
Start small, observe properly, then build from evidence
This ungated pack is for people who want to begin without buying anything or pretending they already understand their site. It is built around four simple weeks: observe, map, choose one small action, and record what changed.
Week 1 — Observe
Read the site before changing it.
- Take repeatable photos.
- Watch water and wind.
- Notice access, shade, existing plants, and wildlife.
Week 2 — Map
Turn observation into a simple working map.
- Mark wet areas and paths.
- Mark sunny/sheltered areas.
- Mark materials, hazards, and maintenance routes.
Week 3 — Choose one action
Pick the smallest useful intervention.
- One bed, one compost improvement, one water observation point, or one habitat action.
- Avoid permanent work until the pattern is clear.
Week 4 — Record and adjust
Measure the result before scaling up.
- What improved?
- What created extra work?
- What should wait until another season?
